Thiem beats Cilic at Rogers Cup, advances to quarters

Rafael Nadal celebrates his victory over Fabio Fognini of Italy during the Rogers Cup. That should give the Austrian a better shot at it, especially given Thiem leads 2-0 on overall head to head against Medvedev.

The defending champion of the Rogers Cup cruised to a 6-3 6-4 win over Pella as he recorded his 379th win at ATP Masters 1000 level, in the process going past the Swiss legend's tally of 378 wins. They will begin their roles immediately and serve until the end of their existing terms, which run through the 2020 Wimbledon. Fognini beat France's Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 7-5. "Will be great if I am able to make that happen". The victory came in blustery conditions, which Nadal said were not a huge bother.

Williams in her match against Osaka, fired 12 aces and didn't face a break point as she beat the Japanese star for the first time in three meetings - avenging her shock loss in last year's controversial US Open final in which the American star was docked a point and a game after losing her temper when warned about coaching.

And speaking after the match to Brad Gilbert, Nadal said the tactical advice from his team helped him to turn the match around.

"I'm having a good season more or less, being competitive nearly in every single event that I have been playing", he said. I think he's one of the guys with the most wins, playing unbelievable, solid tennis every week.

"I had been playing probably a little bit better than him, but the score was against me".

I lost things on the road, so I just tried to add other things on the way to keep being competitive during all these years, no? But we are used to playing like this.

Rain saw the day's final match - between Gael Monfils and Roberto Bautista Agut - pushed back, but not before Thiem and Zverev made straightforward exits.

Medvedev claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Chile's Cristian Garín in the round of 16.

Zverev, the third seed and No. 7 player in the world, slammed his racket in frustration in the first set, which elicited a negative reaction from the crowd.

"Never easy to play against a friend from the same country", Khachanov said of Saturday's rematch.
