Cuse suspends Howard on eve of NCAA tourney

Posted March 23, 2019

Syracuse announced on Wednesday that Howard has been suspended for the entire tournament for a "violation of athletic department policy".

Syracuse's Frank Howard (23) reacts after a basket against Pittsburgh during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament in Charlotte, N.C., Wednesday, March 13, 2019. We know that. We practiced - we had an indication that would be the case. He is averaging 8.9 points per game and shooting 36.4 percent from the field this season. He dropped a season-high 28 points in Thursday's loss to Duke.

The Syracuse Orange's first-round assignment of facing No. 9-seed Baylor Bears was already going to be hard, but now No. 8-seed Syracuse will have to manage Thursday without one of its starting guards.

In Howard's absence, a pair of freshman guards, Jalen Carey and Buddy Boeheim, will likely see more action. We started the year without him at a point obviously. He became embroiled in controversy when he appeared to stick his foot out as Blue Devils star Zion Williamson ran by. Howard denied trying to trip Williamson and the school did not say if the suspension was related to the alleged attempt.

Guard Tyus Battle leads the Orange with 17.2 points per game but will have to get to the paint to get his points. "We've played without players before ... so if we play our game, we'll be fine". If Baylor is going to win this game, they are going to have to make a ton of shots.
