According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Kyrie Irving's right knee sprain isn't serious and expected to be day-to-day.
Irving is averaging 23.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.9 assists and a career-high 1.6 steals per game this season while draining 2.5 threes per night at a 40.9 percent clip.
A tightly fought game with the Philadelphia 76ers put Boston in a similar position to the one they were in against the Lakers a week prior, but a different result emerged: the Celtics held on to their lead. On Saturday night, Boston suffered a 123-112 loss to the Clippers.
Even after Irving's exit, the Clippers outscored the Celtics 75-44 and stifled Boston on defense. More importantly, they've now clinched the season series against the 76ers regardless of what happens in their final matchup, which could come in handy in the waning weeks of the regular season.
The 26-year-old Australian-born American, the first overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, underwent left knee surgery last April. "It's about the attitude that we're playing with. To pull it out was special", said Clippers coach Doc Rivers, who led Boston to the 2008 National Basketball Association championship. "And when I look at us, I just see a bunch of individuals." he added.
Irving, who helped Cleveland win the 2016 National Basketball Association title before being traded to Boston in 2017, helped the U.S. group of National Basketball Association stars to 2016 Rio Olympic gold. Whatever it takes, I'm with it. But I'm trying to win. If you want to take me out of the lineup and get some juice in it, I'm with it. Danilo Gallinari had 19 points and 10 rebounds and trade deadline acquisition Landry Shamet scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter. This is what we're going with. End of the day, man, it's unacceptable what we did tonight. "It's unacceptable for what we did with a team of our caliber".
Now, with Kyrie Irving hitting free agency post the ongoing season, the Celtics management will need to ensure that they clear up this mess.
