Alex Smith carted off with leg injury vs. Texans

On a third-down pass play, Smith's leg was bent awkwardly on a sack by J.J. Watt and had to be carted to the locker room. "They have a strong belief in each other and came up big in the end".

Washington coach Jay Gruden later said Smith is out for the year and had broken the tibia and fibula in his right leg. "The defense did a good job and the offense did just enough".

Alex Smith had to be carted from the field in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Texans after suffering a gruesome lower leg injury.

Smith became the Redskins new starting quarterback in a game of offseason musical chairs at the position that saw former Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins take a nice payday to switch to the Minnesota Vikings.

"I know it was very painful for [Smith] and heartbreaking for a lot of people", Gruden said after the game. "He's a great guy and hard worker and one of the key leaders on this football team".

According to Pro Football Talk, Kaepernick does want to play again, but Washington is one of the spots he's least likely to land.

Replacement Colt McCoy led a comeback attempt, with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Reed added to Adrian Peterson's second rushing score, but two Ka'imi Fairbairn field goals saw Houston home 23-21 as Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins came up short on a late 63-yard attempt.

The Cowboys breathed life into their playoff chase with a 22-19 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

The Redskins, who entered Week 11 with a 6-3 record, are looking to win the NFC East in a year in which the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles have underachieved. Lamar Jackson, making his first Ravens start with Joe Flacco injured, threw for just 150 yards but ran for 117 on 27 carries.
