LAS VEGAS-Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is the new king of the middleweight division after edging Gennady "GGG" Golovkin by majority decision on Saturday night.
The fight was widely considered to be one of the best and despite the controversial decision, several fans paid respect to both fighters for an incredible spectacle.
Two judges favored Alvarez 115-113, while a third had it 114-114. FightNights.com scored it 115-113 for Golovkin.
Alvarez was the aggressor through much of the first half of the fight, which presumably factored into earning a win by decision.
Golovkin seemed to fade in the middle rounds, and after the seventh, his trainer Abel Sanchez urged him on, saying, "We're losing this fight", and exhorting him to pick up the pace.
Speaking after the fight, Canelo said: "If the people want a third fight, we will do it again. He's a great fighter but I'm a great fighter..."
There was plenty of enthusiasm heading into last September's fight between Canelo and GGG, which included some memorable moments and flurry of punches.
The three judges agreed on eight of the 12 rounds, and they all had Alvarez leading six rounds to three heading into the 10th.
"Some very close rounds that could have went either way".
"Canelo fought a great fight, congratulations".
Nearly immediately there was talk of a third fight between two middleweights who now know each other well. Moretti and Weisfeld each gave the 12th to Alvarez and that gave him the fight.
"Under the right conditions, yes, " Golovkin said of a rematch.
Now that Alvarez and Golovkin are 1-1, who's ready for the inevitable third and final fight? So, what time should you show up if you're only interested Canelo-GGG? "Maybe next time they'll see it in our favor".
Note: Golovkin has taken 8-stitches, the cut was 5 cm. long on his right eye.
"It was I who pushed [Golovkin] back, it was I who was most aggressive", Alvarez said.
