Pakistan's government also paid tribute to Vajpayee. Though then Odisha CM Giridhar Gamang who had not resigned his LoK Sabha seat yet also pressed the no button, it was Mr Soz who was credited by the opposition for bringing the 13-month old government down.
The country observed a seven-day state mourning as a mark of respect for the leader.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vajpayee's former deputy LK Advani, BJP President Amit Shah, and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have visited AIIMS over the last two days to enquire about Vajpayee's health. Other political leaders at the funeral were Congress president Rahul Gandhi, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, BJP leaders Murli Manohar Joshi, SAD patriarch Parkash Singh Badal and Congress leader Raj Babbar.
The tricolour that was wrapped around Vajpayee's body was removed and given to his foster granddaughter Niharika after which the body was handed over to the family for last rites.
Vajpayee, who passed away at AIIMS on Thursday evening, had a pan-India appeal and his flair for foreign policy and initiatives were acknowledged globally.
In a message to Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale, SAARC secretary general Amjad Hussain B Sial said: "We have lost a great statesman, politician, writer, poet, and above all a humane person committed to peace". Khan said in a statement that Vajpayee was a prominent political personality of the sub-continent and his death has created a big void.
Vajpayee was not afraid to take risks.
Describing former prime minister's death as a "huge personal loss", Singh said he was pained beyond words at the demise of Vajpayee, who had cherished the ideal of a developed and powerful India.
"He was a charismatic politician who took pride in India and took everyone along". Meanwhile, the British High Commission in Delhi flew its national flag, the Union Jack, at half mast in honour of Vajpayee. Khan said, "I extend sympathies to the people of India in this hour of grief".
Vajpayee, a three-time prime minister, died on Thursday aged 93.
