Anthony Scaramucci said Sunday he accepts President Donald Trump "at his word" that he didn't know beforehand about a meeting between his oldest son and Russians promising dirt on campaign rival Hillary Clinton, and he doesn't understand why the president's former attorney, Michael Cohen, would have leaked something like that.
The newsman said that a single meeting with a Russian lawyer, President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, then-campaign-chairman Paul Manafort, and other staffers is a far cry from collusion.
"Sounds to me like someone is trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam", Trump said. "He even retained Bill and Crooked Hillary's lawyer".
Giuliani said the president is "disappointed" over Cohen's secret recordings, but said that they clear him from any suspicion of wrongdoing. CNN cited anonymous sources saying Cohen was willing to share that information with special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.
That meeting is now one of the central threads of the special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's election interference, whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow, and whether Trump sought to obstruct justice in the investigation. On Friday he called Cohen "an incredible liar who's got a tremendous motive to lie now because he's got nothing to give".
"I expected something like this from Cohen", Giuliani told CNN's Chris Cuomo on Thursday. Weisselberg has worked at the company since the '70s doing all sorts of work for Trump: cutting real-estate deals, handling personal financial transactions and serving as treasurer of the allegedly wildly corrupt Trump Foundation.
Bernie Sanders We have got to make sure that Russia does not interfere
Mr Putin and Mr Trump met in Helsinki last week at a summit, but Mr Trump faced a storm of criticism back home for his handling of the meeting.
Michael Cohen was not present at the Trump Tower meeting and has yet to offer any evidence to support his claim that Trump knew about it in advance. Giuliani has claimed Trump told Cohen, "Don't pay with cash", suggesting he wanted the payment to be properly documented.
"We have complained to them that he's violated the attorney-client privilege, publicly and privately", Giuliani told ABC, adding that both camps were no longer sharing information as part of a joint defense agreement.
Giuliani also said negotiations have momentarily paused with Mueller over a potential voluntary interview with the president. "They definitely don't want Trump!" That's no doubt a reference to the financial and legal troubles Cohen faces in relation to his time as a New York City taxi mogul.
"On the question of the attorney-client privilege that Giuliani is talking about, I don't know exactly what he's talking about, meaning, when it comes to the tape that we've heard about, apparently Giuliani has waived attorney-client privilege", Abrams said.
