French Open 2018: Super-mom Serena Williams ready to do it all

Posted May 31, 2018

Following her win over Pliskova, Williams said the black catsuit she wore on court made her feel like a superhero.

The 36-year-old downed Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 to register her first victory at the majors since her 2017 Australian Open triumph. Although she rescued the game, Pliskova still faced the prospect of Williams serving for the match, an opening the latter eventually took-despite being taken to deuce four times-to progress to Round 2.

"I call it, like, my Wakanda-inspired catsuit", Williams said. "We designed it way before the movie, but still, it kind of reminds me of that". In fact her tennis wasn't even the biggest talking point of the match, it was her black catsuit - which was the literal embodiment of her superhero senses.

"I'm always living in a fantasy world", Williams added. She lost to a wild card in the first round of the French Open previous year.

"I've been asked to put a skirt on over leggings many times".

The suit is, however, not only fun but also functional.

"That's hard. And just coming back from the physical impact of having a baby, at my age is never easy".

She explained: "For so many years, I defined myself in just one way: by success, by championships, by making history".

"I actually breast fed for a really, really, really long time, and so I just had this real connection with my daughter". "I've been wearing trousers, in general, a lot when I play so I can keep the blood circulation going", Williams told reporters. But all the same Williams was too strong, too good, simply too Serena for her world 70-ranked opponent.

"I definitely feel like it is an opportunity for me to inspire a whole different group of fantastic women and kids".

"I am just so happy to have won a match here. thank you all". This was first match on the terre battue since losing the 2016 French open final to the then first-time champion Garbine Muguruza. Considering that the emergency cesarean section she had a mere eight months ago led to a life-threatening pulmonary embolism, both her win and the power vibes she emanated in her fierce ensemble made for a seriously strong comeback. "She's my priority, and I work everything around her". Her baby was born on September 1, and Williams married Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in November.

For all that has changed in the 16 months since Serena Williams last played in a Grand Slam tournament - she is now married and a mother - so much was familiar about her at the French Open today.
