No. 17 MI holds off Penn State for 4th straight win

Posted February 23, 2018

Senior Julian Moore carried a 6-0 run with four points and sophomore guard Nazeer Bostick added a jumper midway through the first half knocked the Wolverine lead to one, 16-15, but a 14-2 stretch gave MI its largest lead of the game at 30-17. "Duncan as well. What Jordan Poole (2-for-2 from deep, 13 points) is giving us right now is really good". Zavier Simpson chipped in nine points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals while Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman added nine points for MI. Lehotak and her squad then travel back to familiar territory for the head coach as the Nittany Lions will play in the Jacksonville Tournament, Feb. 23-25. Lamar Stevens supplied 19 points and eight rebounds.

Points in the paint were controlled by MI, with 30 points, compared to Penn State's 24.

Bench scoring was controlled by Penn State with 34 points off the bench compared to Michigan's 6 points.

Poole, one of those reserves, was also instrumental in the Wolverines' 74-62 victory over No. 8 Ohio State in their home finale Sunday. The Wolverines would take better care of the ball in the second half and end the night with 12 turnovers, which is three more than their average. Penn State will kick off its season with 20 away contests before opening its 2018 home campaign with a weekend series against non-conference opponent Kent State, March 16-18.

Penn State battled Purdue right to the final buzzer before losing 76-73.

Robinson and Poole came off the bench at the same time early in the first half and gave Michigan's offense the spark it needed.

The Wolverines led 34-26 at halftime. When the Wolverines were about to create a distance, the Nittany Lions pulled of 13-4 spurt of their own to grab a 39-38 advantage in the second half. Carr scored six of those points and also fed Stevens for an alley-oop dunk to cap it off.

But the Wolverines went ahead for good on Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman's 3-pointer with 10:19 left.

Abdur-Rahkman's layup with under two minutes left made it 60-54. Robinson was 3-for-6. As a team, the Wolverines were 10-for-21 (48 percent) from downtown.

Penn State will play 24 of its 56 scheduled games insides the friendly confines of Nittany Lion Softball Park and Beard Field. Against Wisconsin, the Wolverines made 70% of their free throw attempts.

A new look and an earlier start to the Big Ten schedule this year means the Gophers will close out the regular season against Penn State - the same team they opened conference play with in early October and haven't seen since.
