Prez Kovind, PM Modi pay homage to Mahatma on death anniversary

Vice President Naidu and Prime Minister Modi too made floral offerings.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and main opposition Congress party's former chief Sonia Gandhi all paid tributes.

Earlier, Congress President Rahul Gandhi went to the Gandhi Smriti to pay homage.

Chennai: Over a decade after he shocked the country by claiming Mahatma Gandhi did not utter the words "Hey Ram" when he was assassinated, his nonagenarian personal attendant said on Gandhi's 70th death anniversary that he had been misquoted.

The President remembering Mahatma Gandhi tweeted, "On Martyrs' Day, we gratefully remember Mahatma Gandhi and the countless freedom fighters who sacrificed their all for our Independence". "We will always remember their courage as well as the dedication towards the nation".

He remembered the other martyrs who sacrificed their life for freedom of our country and paid them tribute.

Singh appealed people to observe 2-minute silence at 10.59am on January 30, in the remembrance of the martyrs.

Union ministers including Arun Jaitley and Mahesh Sharma also took to social media to pay their tributes to Mahatma Gandhi.
