Honda Accord names North American auto of 2018

The 2018 Honda Accord was named vehicle of the Year at the Detroit Auto Show, beating out the Kia Stinger and the Toyota Camry.

As for North American Truck of the Year, the redesigned 2018 Lincoln Navigator beat out the also-redesigned Ford Expedition - which shares the same underpinnings and platform as the Nav - and the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, which interestingly enough, was the only pickup on the list.

The winners were announced at the Cobo Centre in downtown Detroit.

The Accord, which went on sale last fall, is among many revamped auto models hoping to snare buyers as sales fall and SUVs rise.

The Honda Accord won vehicle of the Year on Monday at the Detroit Auto Show.

According to the guidelines, the awards recognize the most outstanding vehicles of the year based on factors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. Utility finalists were the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Honda Odyssey.

The Lincoln Navigator, a luxury truck that NACTOY Juror Ron Sessions of the New York Daily News praised for its "dramatic update", starts at $72,055. The Accord won out thanks to sleek new styling and a roomy, well-appointed interior. "The ride is exemplary, and when smartly equipped, it is a fine value", said Kirk Bell, NACTOY juror and freelance auto writer. "Even in low-end trims, it drives well and offers a strong amount of standard equipment".
