Today is the first day of Kwanzaa

They're hosting a community celebration for all ages on Saturday, Dec. 30 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Though he does not celebrate it as a regular holiday, Hamilton said he supports the principles of Kwanzaa, which are represented by the candles of the seven-branched kinara.

Kwanzaa ends January 1 with a feast and gifts. Each day has a different theme, including self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. The final line of the blog was a quote suggesting that Kwanzaa, like the Seinfeld-inspired Festivus, was a "fake holiday". The name is derived from "matunda ya kwanza", which means "first fruits" in the Swahili language.

Owen's notes that Kwanzaa's seven principles "are identical to the seven principles of the infamous Symbionese Liberation Army, the murderous, bank-robbing gang of revolutionary terrorists who kidnapped newspaper heiress Patty Hearst in 1974". The first day focuses on unity.

Kwanzaa is considered a cultural holiday, not a religious one according to the Official Kwanzaa Website.
