Florida State actually might not be bowl eligible

Honestly, this has nothing to do with anything that Florida State did wrong.

While the Seminoles will take on Southern Miss next Wednesday, Dec. 27, in Shreveport, they aren't really supposed to.

With less than a week remaining until FSU's bowl game, it is unclear what the Seminoles and the NCAA could do to rectify the situation. After a so-so 4-3 start, they finished the regular season by winning four out of five games, with the lone loss being to Florida in Gainesville.

Reddit received data from Delaware State confirming that the school was actually under that limit (87-percent) and therefore Florida State's win over the school shouldn't be counted towards bowl eligibility under NCAA rules. For a win over an FCS team to be countable toward bowl eligibility, that school has to have awarded at least 90 percent of potential scholarships to players.

College football insider Brett McMurphy was able to later confirm the report, with Florida State's inclusion in a bowl game being called a "monumental oversight" that should have been caught at three levels. The Blazers can also run the ball quite effectively as they're 37th nationally (190.3 ypg); that plays right into the MAC school's strength, however, as the Bobcats are 11th in stopping the run (111.4 ypg).

Florida State reached six wins this season by winning its last three games, including one against Louisiana-Monroe that was rescheduled for December 2 after being indefinitely postponed due to Hurricane Irma.

It's extremely unlikely that FSU would be denied a chance to play in the bowl game.

"It's a matter between the NCAA, Florida State and Delaware State", Independence Bowl media relations director Stefan Nolet said in a statement released to the Sun Herald.

The rules of bowl eligibility in college football are relatively straightforward, but sometimes six wins do not count as six wins.

This means that they were not in compliance with Exception in the NCAA Division I Manual.

It has been a rough year for Florida State.

"We're focused on this football team and being the best Florida state football team we can be", interim coach Odell Haggins said after Thursday's practice.
