UCLA names Chip Kelly new head football coach

UCLA is reportedly finalizing a deal to make Chip Kelly its new head football coach, according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo!

Is this the right move for the Bruins?

The Gators had kept their options open while pursuing Kelly, and are expected to shift their focus to Scott Frost, who, in his second season with UCF, has guided the Knights to an undefeated season ahead of their matchup against South Florida on Friday.

"I am thrilled to welcome Chip Kelly to Westwood", Bruins Athletics Director Dan Guerrero said. Kelly was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 2009 and 2010, and Associated Press Coach of the Year in 2010.

The college game knows Kelly for the massive success he had at Oregon.

Kelly left OR for the National Football League shortly before NCAA sanctions were handed down. The NCAA ruled that Kelly wasn't aware of Lyles' actions but said he was responsible for ensuring his program was in compliance.

He went 28-35 with Philadelphia and San Francisco from 2013-16, including 2-14 in 2016 with the 49ers.

The 49ers now owe Kelly approximately $15 million, sources told ESPN's Darren Rovell. He could still remain in an analyst role at ESPN, where he has spent this season. He turns 54 on November 25.

The hire itself is a landmark accomplishment for a program that has not won a conference title since 1998 and not won the Rose Bowl since the 1985 season.
