Brazilian football star Robinho sentenced to jail for sexual assault

A statement has been issued on his Instagram profile, from his lawyers, denying he was involved.

The 33-year-old, who is now back playing football in Brazil, denied assaulting a 22-year-old woman at a Milan disco.

Former Manchester City forward Robinho is sentenced to nine years in jail for sexual assault.

The Brazilian has been found guilty of a 2013 gang-rape of a 22-year-old Albanian woman in a Milan nightclub, according to Sky Italia.

His transfer to City, for £32.5m, made him the most expensive player in British football, but after two years Robinho was sold to AC Milan for roughly £15m.

"I clarify that my client has already defended himself against the charges and maintains he played no part in the incident".

The Italian court process allows for multiple appeals and it was reported that his sentence will be put on hold until the process has run its course.

He spent just one season in China before moving back to Brazil with Atletico Mineiro in 2016. Brazil does not extradite its own citizens when they are sentenced in other countries.

It added: "All legal steps are now being taken with regards to this decision by a court of first instance".

Robinho moved to Europe amid much hype in 2005 when he joined Real Madrid from Santos - but he only showed his talent intermittently.
