At least three people were killed and 10 others injured in a stampede during Kartik Purnima celebrations on Saturday at Simaria ghat in Begusarai district of Bihar. Several numbers of pilgrims visited Ganga rivers banks to celebrate Kartik Purnima festival. He further added that the identities of the women have not been ascertained yet.
An ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the families of each deceased person, was announced by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
The authorities have confirmed three women were killed in the stampede and the the bodies are yet to be identified.
All the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where they were given medical treatment.
The incident occurred at the Simaria Ghat, where thousands of devotees had gathered to take a holy dip in the Ganga on Kartik Purnima, reported ANI.
ADG (Headquarters) Sunil Kumar Singhal also said the deaths were caused due to suffocation. If any negligence on part of the police is found, accountability will be fixed.
According to PTI, Sadar Deputy Superintendent of Police Mithilesh Kumar had said, "We are trying to ascertain the cause behind the incident".
