Auburn debuts in top 15 of College Football Playoff rankings

MI (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) wasn't a realistic shot to make the first CFP rankings, even though the Top 25 includes 10 teams with two losses. The Crimson Tide would be favored if the SEC championship game was this week.

Notre Dame's one-point loss to the Bulldogs didn't stop the Irish from taking the third spot.

Unbeaten Alabama is second, followed by Notre Dame and Clemson. With Washington State losing again, USC getting embarrassed by Notre Dame, and Stanford having to come back to beat a one-win Oregon State team, the Huskies appear to be the only chance that the Pac-12 has at reaching the CFP this season.

Oklahoma, which sits at No. 5, is led by Heisman hopeful Baker Mayfield, who's been a human highlight reel this season under first-year head coach Lincoln Riley. That can change this week, as Alabama hosts No. 19 LSU. Penn State is at No. 7 in both the AP and CFB rankings.

This is the fourth season of the playoff, and until now Georgia had been a non-factor in the process. "It's not really done that way. That's all I'm thinking about".

"We spent considerable time (Monday) talking about the differences between Georgia and Alabama".

The Bulldogs defeated Vanderbilt and Florida this year by a combined 87-21. "We've kind of been through the fire, and we're here at 8-0, but we still have a lot of work to do".

Last season, Auburn opened at No. 9 in the CFP rankings and ended the regular season No. 14 to earn a spot in the Sugar Bowl. The committee will re-rank the teams each week through December 3, when it will place the top four in the national semifinals, which this season will be played in the Rose and Sugar bowls on New Year's Day. Still, it's favorable to be considered in that top four this early on into the year and every team that makes it is striving to stay there.

Although the competition has not been very strong to this point and they have only one win over a ranked team this season, Alabama has dominated like a top-ranked team should by outscoring conference opponents 238-38.

Saban didn't make much of the playoff rankings three years ago, and that has remained the case this week.

"I (couldn't) care less about the poll". "What significance does a poll have right now?" The Tide should finally face some tougher competition with three of their final four games being against now ranked teams.
