Roger Federer survived a surprise test at the Swiss Indoors on Friday (Oct 27) before making the semi-finals at his home event for the 14th time with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Adrian Mannarino.

The Frenchman had two break points when leading 3-2 in the final set, but Federer responded superbly - saving the second with an outrageous backhand half-volley - and charged to the winning line thereafter.

The top-seeded Swiss saved two break points when trailing 3-2 in the decisive set, including with a backhand half-volley victor from the baseline.

In the third, Del Potro again found his lethal form, cruising to the victory by firing a trademark forehand victor on his second match point.

David Goffin, the third-seeded Belgian, beat qualifier Peter Gojowczyk of Germany 6-2, 7-5, and fifth-seeded Jack Sock of the US rallied for a 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5 victory against Vasek Pospisil of Canada.

Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro, both former U.S. Open winners, will face each other in the other semifinal after also being pushed to three-set wins.

Del Potro continued his late charge towards an unlikely spot in the ATP World Tour Finals by seeing off sixth seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 2-6 6-4.

Sloppy from the start, Federer is chasing an eighth title in his hometown tournament.
