Republican leaders annoyed' over Ivanka visit during meeting

Trump didn't mention House Speaker Paul Ryan or Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who were also present at the meeting but opposed the Dem-backed deal. A Democratic aide who was briefed on the meeting told The Washington Examiner that budget discussions between GOP and Democratic leadership came to a screeching halt when the first daughter dropped by like she's the wacky neighbor on a sitcom.

"The need for certainty now is incredibly important", Mr. McConnell said on the Senate floor Wednesday, noting that he was in discussions with Democrats.

McConnell noted during a press conference that Trump had agreed to the deal with the Democratic leaders, reluctantly saying he would support the measure.

The plan would extend the US debt limit and provide funds to keep the government running through December 15, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said in a joint statement.

President Trump has agreed to pass aid for the Hurricane Harvey relief effort, a three-month extension of the debt limit and a short-term government spending bill that both would expire in mid-December, according to Democrats.

Conservatives were already balking over a plan to attach a debt ceiling increase to the Harvey recovery bill that cleared the House on Wednesday.

GOP leaders have indicated they want to link a $7.9 billion initial installment of disaster aid with a debt limit increase - allowing the government to borrow freely again to cover its bills. "That will include the debt ceiling, that will include the CRs, and it will include Harvey".

Republicans will need at least eight Democrats in the Senate to vote for Harvey aid.

Trump signaled after the meeting that he was willing to move quickly to raise the debt ceiling for a three-month extension.

"We discussed that also today, and Chuck and Nancy would like to see something happen, and so do I", Trump said.

The House vote is only the first step in the legislative process.

Granting just a three-month debt limit increase is a hardball tactic that preserves Democrats' ability to force another poisonous fight on Republicans at the end of the year.

Later, Schumer told reporters, "We thought for the good of the country we should make the right offer and we did, and we're very glad the president accepted it".

The meeting was created to discuss legislation to provide relief for Hurricane Harvey, raise or suspend the debt ceiling, and fund the government past the end of September.

The proposal attaches the disaster aid to a government funding bill that would raise the USA debt limit and keep the government running through 15 December, setting up a fiscal showdown at the end of the year that Republicans had hoped to avoid.

"Democrats are prepared to offer our votes for the Harvey aid package, and a short-term debt limit increase of three months", the two Democrats said in a joint statement.

If Congress does not raise the debt limit, the United States will run out of money to pay its bills.

"The Pelosi-Schumer-Trump deal is bad", Sasse said.

The deal comes after the House passed a stand-alone Harvey bill in a 419-3 vote on Wednesday.

Top Republicans also wanted to deny any leverage to Democrats, who are seeking concessions on issues such as immigration, healthcare and tax reform.
