Josef Newgarden wins Honda Indy Toronto

Posted July 17, 2017

Newgarden raced to his second Toronto victory in three years on Monday (NZT), dominating on the streets surrounding Exhibition Place. So how do you watch the Honda Indy Toronto live?

He previously took first back at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama in April, the second time he has taken first place at Barber Motorsports Park (with the other victory coming in 2015) and the earliest into any season in which he has claimed a win.

With two of the best drivers in the current generation sidelined for the day, the next key moment came when Dixon's teammate, Tony Kanaan, nosed in at Turn 1 at Lap 23 and brought out a full-course caution.

Ed Carpenter Racing could have another strong weekend.

Alexander Rossi was second, and James Hinchcliffe finished third in his hometown race for the second straight year. For the second consecutive year, the Oakville driver turned sixth on the grid to third on the podium. He finished eighth, his worst performance of the season in races in which he wasn't taken out in a crash.

"It's a track that Scott Dixon excels at", Tracy said.

"But other guys can say the same thing". Newgarden won this race two years ago.

Michael Andretti has won here seven times from 1989-2001, while the now defunct Newman-Haas team also won seven races from 1989-2004. Gateway will be repaved before its August 26 race with a test to come next month, so while the field did test there in May, it'll be a completely new track to everyone, and that in theory levels the playing field. "It was a good call at the right time".

"Thank you to the guys and thank you to Tim [Cindric] for making that call". No less than four drivers ended up hitting the wall in Turn 11 previous year, so it seems the concerns weren't completely unfounded.

Josef Newgarden was in the right place at the right time.

"I think we had the strongest auto today", he said.

Last weekend's race in Iowa, where Hinchcliffe finished 10th, was the 100th of his career, a milestone which he said is "pretty insane to think about". Graham Rahal appeared to slow up to avoid Pagenaud, when cars began stacking up.

Power's auto got the worst of it, breaking a right-front suspension piece.

It put Dixon off the boil on strategy and despite rebounding from 20th to run as high as fourth, he was left to finish in 10th.

In the 11-turn, 1.786-mile street circuit, Rossi had speed throughout the day and improved on his P8 starting position with quick pit stops and a fortunate yellow.

Sellers started on the pole in the opener, lost the lead and regained it for good on Lap 31. The four Penske cars had been dominant for Chevrolet much of the weekend, with Simon Pagenaud winning the pole on Saturday. Power held-off Helio Castroneves on a last-lap restart to score career win number 28.

Once the race went back to green, there was very little else to it. Newgarden built a comfortable lead over Rossi with Hinchcliffe a very clear third.

In addition, the Xfinity Series will visit the Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course on August 12, where Hinchcliffe has raced twice in Indy Lights and five times in IndyCar.
