Smith had been rumoured for weeks to be taking the role made famous by Robin Williams in the original 1992 cartoon.

Joining Massoud in the whole new world of Disney musicals is 24-year-old British actress Naomi Scott, who has been cast as Princess Jasmine.

What are your thoughts on Will Smith being cast as Genie in the live-action Aladdin film?

So far the young star only has a handful of acting credits, including Jack Ryan, Open Heart, and The 99.

They're having a hard time finding a man who is in his 20s who can act and sing who is also either Middle Eastern or Indian, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Aladdin is one of Disney's most beloved and successful classics earning more than $504 million worldwide and the characters are prominent at the company's theme parks. Even though rumors of difficulty in casting leads surfaced a few days ago, Disney had no problem announcing their core cast.

The casting news was revealed at Disney's fan convention, the D23 Expo, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, near Disneyland.

The live-actionAladdin movie is set to start filming this summer and wrap filming in early 2018.

Scott also has an impressive resume, recently starring as Kimberly Hart, the Pink Ranger, in the big-screen "Power Rangers" reboot. The project does not yet have a release date.
