Super Srikanth lifts Australian Open Super Series

India's Srikanth Kidambi claimed a first victory over Olympic and two-time world champion Chen Long to win the Australian Open Superseries final in Sydney today.

The Indian shuttler, who is having a rollicking time, became the fifth player in the world to contest three successive Super Series finals. The triumph is his second successive after clinching the Indonesia Open Super Series Premier title last week.

The 24-year-old Srikanth extended his stellar run of form to become the first Indian male shuttler to win two consecutive Superseries title. All of us went to the stadium where Srikanth used to play, before he joined the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy. Srikanth continued to remain aggressive but trailed for the first time in the second game after a successful challenge from Chen.

His power-packed smashes punctuated by his deceptive net shots pretty much took the wind out of Yuqi's sails. "I played him twice this year, I lost 21-19 or so", he said.

Srikanth Kadambi won the Australian Open Series and created a history. As his coach, I am very satisfied with his performance and the way he won both the series - from the player against who he won and with a brilliant score!

Another streak of five points saw Srikanth at a commanding 15-8 advantage.

The trophy is Srikanth's second this season and fourth overall. Shi grabbed three straight points but another rally ended with his shuttle going long as Srikanth moved to 16-11. Srikanth did not let the lead slip from that point, raising his game by quite a few notches against an increasingly faltering Long.
