His parents told the Washington Post newspaper their son is in a coma and has been for over a year.

The person, said to Mr Warmbier, was carried from the plane and did not appear to be moving independently. US officials did not confirm those details.

North Korean representatives at the United Nations did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Warmbier would have graduated in May.

An American student who fell into a coma while imprisoned in a North Korean labor camp returned to the United States late Tuesday after Pyongyang allowed him to be flown home, U.S. media reported.

In Tokyo, a visiting senior USA official said Rodman is making the trip as a private citizen.
