SmackDown Recap: Backlash Go-Home Show

Posted May 18, 2017

Last night's episode of SmackDown Live, a loaded show that featured AJ Styles vs Jinder Mahal as well as Baron Corbin vs Randy Orton, drew just 2.175 million viewers, according to ShowBuzz Daily.

AJ Styles for the U.S. Championship. Tonight, Kevin Owens will be hosting an episode of The Highlight Reel. Styles for his part said that he would bring the U.S. title back to America. Styles hit him with a series of kicks then went for the Styles Clash, but Mahal blocked it. Styles with a series of strikes but the Singh Brothers distracted him, and Mahal sent him into the ropes and a running knee strike for 2. Giving Owens the Highlight Reel and allowing him to keep trolling Jericho until Jericho's eventual return is smart booking, but future segments better be more entertaining than that one. With Orton and Styles it goes without saying that there's a lot of testosterone in the ring and eventually someone gets revved up a bit too far. This allowed Mahal to connect with the Cobra Clutch slam to pick up a huge win ahead of Backlash PPV. Dun-dunn! Tyler Breeze goes undercover as a janitor, totally fooling his partner, Fandango.

The Welcoming Committee has gotten the upper hand time and time again, and it continued Tuesday night when Carmella pinned the champ. Mahal tells him that there have been plenty of opportunities for RKOs and Randy hasn't caught him yet. This was to make the six-woman tag team match official for this Sunday's Backlash.

At Backlash, both Jinder Mahal and AJ Styles will be challenging for titles.

Ziggler has become known for making other WWE superstars look good in the ring, and he was probably pegged as Nakamura's first opponent for the sole objective of getting the Japanese wrestler over. Rusev upped the ante, stating that he will confront Shane McMahon on SmackDown Live since he has yet to get a response from him.

Post-match, The Usos walked out and cut a promo about how they wrestle for the Tag Team Titles. Orton's guard is down and it's the Maharaja's time to win the title. WWE Backlash 2017 is set for Sunday night in Rosemont, Illinois at the Allstate Arena with a few new faces set to compete in some of the card's biggest matches. He ended Smackdown by posing with Orton's championship belt.
