'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' blasts off with $145M debut

When it comes to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, everyone has been so preoccupied with where said threequel fits into the MCU timeline that few have stopped to ask the question: when, exactly, will James Gunn's trilogy-capper be released?

Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and Karen Gillian star alongside Vin Diesel as the voice of baby Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket.

Movie fans will see the release of other major films over the next two weeks, which includes King Arthur and Alien: Covenant.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is dominating the box office, and it would seem to have solidified itself as a mega-franchise Marvel could milk for years. "The Fate of the Furious" came in at no. 2 with $8.5 million in its fourth weekend. Still, the $145 million estimate, courtesy of Box Office Mojo, is a solid start to the summer movie season, with the movie earning an impressive $33,368 per-screen average from 4,347 theaters.

"And, like in both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect". F&F is tipping toward a major worldwide play as the franchise ages; it's made $950 million everywhere else in the world, far outpacing the roughly 50/50 split that most Hollywood blockbusters still see these days.

This marks the 15th release by Marvel Studios. The numbers will likely only get larger as worldwide box office figures are tallied in the coming days. Indian film Baahubali 2 took the seventh spot. Its global gross to date is $283 million.

"How to Be a Latin Lover", $5.3 million ($5.6 million international).

At the domestic box office, Beauty and the Beast has pulled in $487 million. It's wedged between "Spider-Man 3" ($151.1 million) and "Iron Man 2" ($128.1 million).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now playing!

But Fate of the Furious is performing so well overseas that it is overshadowing the US box office.

"The Boss Baby", $17 million. For those who were unaware, Beauty and the Beast has been one of the biggest performing films of 2017.
