Indian girl, 10, seeks abortion after rape

A 10-year-old girl from Rohtak, Haryana, in northern India, who had accused her stepfather of repeatedly raping her over a period, has been allowed to undergo abortion.

Meanwhile, the mother of the rape victim said she could not believe her husband did such a disgusting thing to her daughter.

The district court will take a call on the matter on Tuesday, the police said.

"We are examining the female to determine the best method for abortion".

Indian law does not allow terminations after 20 weeks unless doctors certify that the pregnant woman's life is in danger, but the medical experts passed the motion. Yet, she said, she wanted her husband to be released from jail to be able to run the household and raise their four children.

Reports said the girl was often left at home when her mother went to work.

Police have since arrested two men in the case, including one suspect the victim's parents alleged had been stalking their daughter, and they were searching for six more suspects, Rohtak police official Navdeep Virk said.

The abuse "had been going on for years", he added.

In a particularly brutal case, a postmortem examination found the woman had been raped with sharp objects.

The police have appealed the girl to come forward as they could not locate her at the address mentioned in the letter. Her face had also been smashed with a brick, and a vehicle ran over her body so she could not be identified, according to a report in the Hindustan Times.

Almost 40,000 rape cases are reported every year in India, but the real number is thought to be much higher, with victims wary of how their complaints will be dealt with or the social stigma attached to sex crimes. She died two weeks later at a hospital in Singapore.
