The announcement is pending approval of the Office of Government Ethics, but is targeted to be made before President Donald Trump meets with Pope Francis on 24 May in Rome, according to the report.

A lifelong Catholic, Callista Gingrich married Newt in 2000, shortly after the former Speaker had divorced his 2nd wife.

Callista Gingrich is the Trump administration's favorite to serve as the ambassador to The Vatican, CNN reported.

Callista had a major role in the 2010conversion of her husband to Catholicism and she also played a critical role in breaking up Newt's second marriage from his ex-wife and former adviser Marianne Gingrich.

"What they ought to do is get out of all this junk, they ought to focus on the big goals, they ought to report to the nation on the big goals, ignore all these reporters, close down the press room, send the reporters off [to Starbucks]", Gingrich said on Fox News's Hannity.

Trump is slated to depart Friday for a tour overseas, which will include a meeting with Pope Francis in Rome on May 24.

"It might make me biased, but I think that her years of singing in the choir at the national shrine has given her a backstage pass to some of the most important events in the life in the church in the United States, including two papal visits", said Schlageter, who is a friend of the couple. Prior to that, she was a congressional aide in the House of Representatives.

However, the procedure of the nomination took too long. Another considered for the position was Rick Santorum, the former senator from Pennsylvania. William Simon Jr., a friend of Rudy Giuliani, was also said to be in the running. He only said that he and his wife were told to "be very cautious" until the nomination was confirmed and announced by the administration.
