A pleasant Mother's Day for one NY family was turned upside down after a mother died moments after pushing her daughter out of the way of an out-of-control vehicle.
LINDENHURST, N.Y. (AP) A woman out walking with her teen daughter on Mother's Day was killed when a vehicle came onto the sidewalk and hit them.
"You could see the mother kind of throw the daughter out of the way and sacrifice herself, trying to save her own daughter", a witness said.
Witnesses say Aluska pushed her daughter out of the way, possibly saving her life.
Officials said she was taken to a hospital, where she died. Jenna was also taken to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Tracey Morelli noted on social media that she sat behind Diane and Jenna during mass and was only "a few steps ahead of them" when the accident happened. "She was everything to us.I can't put it into words". The mother was pronounced dead.
"She doesn't know", Mr. Kenneth Aluska, Jenna's father and Diane's husband, stated, "Me and her brother have to tell her".
"The one that was lying over there on the ground, she was looking for her mother, she just kept screaming for her mom", eyewitness Victoria Fisher Kelly told ABC 7 of the scene of the tragic accident. He said his daughter was doing as well as could be expected - but on Monday morning, he had to do the unthinkable and tell her that her mother had died.
Murphy said he does not anticipate charges for Riolo.
'It appears to be non-criminal, just a very bad accident, ' Sergeant Murphy said.
This is a terrible tragedy on any day, but for it to happen on Mother's Day strikes a particularly emotional chord.
