'New Girl' renewed for seventh and final season

It's easy to forget this today, but New Girl was pioneering when released in 2011.

The network has renewed its longest-running live-action current comedy series for a seventh-but-final season.

"New Girl" did not bring in big numbers its past season, but the show is an important property to Fox, being owned by 20th Century Fox TV and having made rich syndication deals over the years at TBS, MTV and Netflix. Fox alone has cut such single-season shows as Pitch, APB, Son of Zorn and Making History; it has yet to announce the fates of 24: Legacy, Wayward Pines and more. No episode count has been revealed, but it is believed to be 8, which was confirmed by star Jake Johnson. "Also Happy Mother's Day, ladies". "The general scuttlebutt is good and positive that we will be coming back".

Executive producer Brett Baer also told Entertainment Weekly that, following the finale's airing, the crew didn't know much about whether or not the show would be returning.

It would've worked either way as the recent Season 6 finale tied up things in a nice bow, with Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) rekindling their romance, Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) expecting, and Winston (Lamorne Morris) calling his father with Aly's (Nasim Pedrad) help.

According to a source who spoke to Variety, the final season of New Girl will be shortened to just eight episodes with the story being wrapped up for good by the end. The final season will likely follow the gang as they pack up the loft and transition into these exciting new chapters.
