Easy choice: Browns CB Haden wants Garrett with No. 1 pick

Posted April 28, 2017

It could look quarterback with that selection.

Who would you pick and why?

This year the Browns could use some of that draft capital to move up for a player they covet.

"We don't want to make a habit of turning two picks into one, but we're positioned to do it, " Brown said. Among the names they will be keeping an eye on are Mitchell Trubisky, DeShone Kizer, DeShuan Watson and Patrick Mahomes II. Malik Hooker from Ohio State might be hard to resist if he slips to 12.

There are quarterback-needy teams that pick soon after the 49ers, which could be the reason a team would trade up to No. 2. The last two picks, including Tabor, will help rejuvenate a secondary that has not been able to rely on highly paid cornerback Joe Haden for several years now. This draft is deep in cornerbacks. "We don't get flustered by it", Brown said about reports they were divided internally about who to select No. 1. Cameron Erving, the 2015 first-round pick, failed at center a year ago but will get the chance to compete for the right tackle job.

Executive Vice President Sashi Brown confirmed that quarterback Brock Osweiler will compete for the starting quarterback job after being acquired in a trade with Houston.

SI's Chris Burke is back with his latest mock draft and he made a decision to shake things back up again. But the Browns may not be willing to do so if they believe in Trubisky that much.

One week before the NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns have become the X-factor for how the first few picks may play out. Many see Garrett as a franchise changing defensive end who could be an anchor for the Browns defense for years to come. There is nothing not to like about him. However, fans of the Cleveland Browns shouldn't discount this team trying to shake things up and really get some talent onto a roster desperately in need of it.

The real question though is who they take 12th overall. At the NFL's spring meetings, coach Hue Jackson said he did not know whether Osweiler would be on the team in August. Trubisky completed 68 percent of his passes last fall while throwing 30 touchdown passes and only six interceptions. Garrett certainly fits the mold of a No. 1 overall player.

He's the consensus top player available, and the Browns will have first crack at him.

And with that, Cleveland's seemingly endless quarterback quest took another twist. Trubisky is obviously a roll of the dice given that he only started one year for the Tar Heels, but he showed impressive accuracy, athleticism and pocket awareness in 2016. But the likeliest scenario is that the Browns stick with Garrett, leaving the next 31 picks in the draft open for business. The Combine basically confirmed this pick. "There is always a surprise somewhere in that top 10, whether it is someone trading up or a team taking a player that you don't expect".

Dane Brugler, No. 12: O.J.

"If the quarterback has the physical talent to produce, has the work ethic, has the preparation and then most importantly has the aptitude, it may take him a little bit longer, but those guys typically do have success in the National Football League", vice president of player personnel Andrew Berry said. But is the "right" quarterback in this class? "We learned a lot about what makes him tick, what motivates him, how he spends his down time, how he spends his time with his teammates".

Jim Miller, No. 1: Myles Garrett, OLB, Texas A&M.

"We would like to think every year that we would go in knowing exactly what is going to happen, and every year we don't", Brown said.
