An extremely talented but often mercurial personality, the 23-year-old Berahino finally left the Baggies in this transfer window as Stoke City provided a £12 million transfer fee last week for the Burundi-born turned England global.
However, a report in the Daily Mail claims Berahino's absence from both the senior and Under-23 sides was down to a Football Association (FA) suspension following a failed an out-of-competition test.
"Why wouldn't I play him?" the Welshman said. Saido had an eight-week suspension, I don't think it was three months.
"We are aware of it, clearly, said Hughes". That's about it really. "We're not in a position to give much more detail".
"We have brought in a player with great ability, of a good age who hasn't reached his peak yet".
Hughes was insistent that the player is keen to put the incident in the past and added: "He's had issues at his previous club for maybe 18 months and maybe this is part of it". We move on and Saido is looking to move on.
"Having said that they've done the decent think, this football club, and really tried to find the high ground and stay with the high ground".
Asked if he was concerned Berahino has an ongoing problem, Hughes said: 'No, not at all'.
"I am not that type of player". Speaking yesterday, Pulis hinted at some displeasure at those comments and defended the club's treatment of a player who first joined them aged 11. "Saido is of a view that he is used to it at West Brom and he's not facing anything that he hasn't faced before". "He's not going to be expecting anything he hasn't had before".
West Brom boss Tony Pulis told the media that his striker was out of the team due to fitness issues, and was at one point sent to a training camp in France to deal with weight problems.
It is believed that Berahino got off lightly as "positive test for recreational drugs outside of competition is not considered a breach of World Anti-Doping Agency Code".
West Bromwich Albion host Stoke City at The Hawthorns in the Premier League on Saturday February 4, kicking off at 1500 GMT.
