With 4 games to go, Giants offense needs to wake up

Posted December 06, 2016

"It really came down to those two red zones trips", said Manning after the Steeler defense squashed NY 24-14.

Speaking of veteran linebackers, with the Steelers up 5-0 in the second quarter, Lawrence Timmons made a key interception near the Steelers' goal line to thwart a NY red zone opportunity. In addition to the safety and Simmons' pick, the Steelers stopped the Giants on downs early in the third quarter to briefly preserve at two-touchdown lead and Davis collected the first interception of his career when the second-round pick stepped in front of a fourth-down heave by Manning in the final quarter. He was sacked twice and threw one interception. "With officials, you want to kill them with kindness". The Bills are now 6-6 and the Steelers are 7-5. Does he plan to speak to Ben McAdoo or Eli Manning about it? After that, he said, "it's (the offense's lack of) consistency".

While the safety allowed simply knocking the pass down would have been the smarter play, he didn't exactly feel the need to apologize.

"It's us against the world, in a sense", Beckham said.

"It's the time of year that we have to be our best self: offense, defense, special teams", Roethlisberger said. The team is still believing in me, they keep pushing me, so everything is getting better. Steelers fans hope it's a gift.

- Roethlisberger hasn't thrown for more than 300 yards in the last three games, all Steelers wins.

Kicker Chris Boswell is now sidelined with an abdominal injury.

Manning, one of three 40,000-yard passers from that Class of 2004 that also includes San Diego's Philip Rivers, finally got the Giants (8-4) into the end zone in the third quarter. In Week 1 in Dallas, the Giants ran the ball 24 times and Manning had 28 pass attempts. Taken 11 picks apart in the 2004 National Football League draft, the two quarterbacks have spent the last dozen years watching each other from afar, using the other's success as a measuring stick of their own accomplishments. Ben Roethlisberger had 24 completions for 289 yards and two touchdowns. Like I said, it's just a matter of a couple plays being the difference, a couple of inches difference, not getting possible touchdowns instead of no points. Part of that is definitely on Roethlisberger for stretching plays, but protecting the franchise QB is a must.

The Steelers appeared to have the ball near midfield on a punt return, but Artie Burns was flagged for a block in the back.

CATCHING ON: Green amassed a game-high 110 receiving yards and caught his first touchdown pass with the Steelers among his six catches.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said his defense combined consistent pressure with "great coverage. and you need that against a quarterback as savvy and as seasoned as Eli". The simple and obvious reason is that Cruz is sandwiched between one of the game's true superstars at any position in Odell Beckham Jr., and a promising rookie in Sterling Shepard - who had his own issues with targets last week. He also didn't think referee Terry McAulay's crew should officiate any more Giants games.

"I went up to ask him what was going on, what was the flag, and he said, 'Get out my face, '" Beckham said. It's about making those signature plays this time of year to get you out of the stadium.

"We knew they were coming in gearing to stop the run, and we knew we had a long game ahead of us", Bell said.

Beckham himself explained after the game that it was "not like I'm sitting there rooting for him against our team; oh, man, tear it up".

NOTES: Steelers S Shamarko Thomas and NT Javon Hargrave both left with concussions. The Steelers dominated time of possession, holding the ball for 34:06 on Sunday.
