Childish Gambino - "Awaken, My Love"

Posted December 03, 2016

Donald Glover marked his return to music by doing what he's done all year long - the unexpected.

Once a writer on NBC's 30 Rock, the 33-year-old became a breakout character on the network's since-canceled cult sitcom Community, playing affable nerd Troy Barnes. This is more funk-soul inspired by the likes of Sly Stone, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, taken from his time growing up.

It is hard to say whether it was always a game of a chess, but if it were, Childish Gambino, a.k.a. Donald Glover, had the game plan all along. Gambino doesn't just choose to rap over "different" sounding beats, he scraps the art of traditional rapping altogether and communicates on an entirely different frequency throughout.

All of the 11 tracks on * a href="*/*/-AWAKEN-MY-LOVE-CD-ALBUM/5D2Z0000000" rel="external" *"Awaken, My Love!" were written by Childish Gambino.

Unlike his introspective past albums, listening to this more ambitious effort on your computer or through headphones isn't how Gambino sees fans interacting with it.

The title had not been revealed yet, but Awaken, My Love! was previewed in September for audiences across three days, at Glover's PHAROS event/festival in Joshua Tree, California.

"Awaken, My Love!" is the official follow-up 2013's "Because the Internet".
