"When you have a potential suspect inside a building as big as the airport and several levels of parking garage to search, it's going to be time consuming", said Oklahoma City police Capt. Paco Balderrama.

Police confirmed Buie resigned from his job with Southwest Airlines in 2015. Buie fired the shot from the fourth floor of a parking garage when Winchester was about 50 yards away, he said.

"We know his intentions were to go to the airport and hurt someone".

He was in Oklahoma City for work, leaving for the airport to return home when he heard the news.

Officer Megan Morgan said there was a shooting at the airport Tuesday afternoon, but had no other details. One of his children is James who also played football for OU, and now is the long snapper for the Kansas City Chiefs. Police say the airport has been closed following a shooting the.

The airport handles between 7,000 and 8,000 passengers daily for Alaska, Allegiant, American, Delta, Southwest and United airlines. The airport was put on lockdown after a shooting at the main terminal. The company said Buie had exhibited "symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol while at work" one day in April 2015.

Buie was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after Tuesday afternoon's shooting. Police said they did not know his job title.

The captain said it appeared the suspect waited in his truck for the victim, a Southwest Airlines employee named Michael Winchester, to either arrive for or leave work. Southwest Airlines immediately request he be tested, but Buie declined and resigned. The ground stop was lifted at about 6 p.m. Tuesday and flight operations resumed, though 25 flights were canceled because of the incident.

Flights were operating normally Wednesday at Will Rogers World Airport. Southwest redirected one flight back to Dallas while a Las Vegas to Houston flight that stops in Oklahoma City went to Amarillo, Texas, instead.

"The Southwest Airlines Family is deeply saddened by the passing of our Southwest Family Member, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies and support to his family and Southwest co-workers at this time", the statement read.

Oklahoma City police investigators are trying to figure out why a man waited to gun down an airline employee outside Will Rogers World Airport in an ambush that prompted authorities to shut down the state's busiest airport for hours.

The shooting set off a scramble at the airport, with police immediately closing the sprawling complex and asking passengers inside to seek cover.
