Harbaugh learns from botched punt vs. MSU last year

"Somewhat normal" was better, but not quite good enough to get the job done for Michigan State at Maryland. So I think a lot of that goes into that.

Elsewhere, despite loses five games over the last three seasons combined, the Spartans have now lost five games in a row afer a 28-17 road loss at Maryland. Michigan State (2-5, 0-4) self-destructed early and got run over late. A bowl game isn't much of a positive for a program that made the playoffs last year and have won the Big Ten multiple times over the last five years.

Michigan Wolverines head football coach Jim Harbaugh wants things to go his way, regardless of the game situation. That's why, unless MI does something spectacularly embarrassing to the Spartans on Saturday, the same criticism will still largely be in place.

It should also be reiterated that MI was up 33 points in the game.

Mentions of the play still sting, of course, but the Wolverines won't be playing any looping video of Jalen Watts-Jackson sprinting to the corner of the Big House's north end zone for motivation around the locker room this week. Hills was 21 of 27 for 200 yards. And the senior led a pair of long touchdown drives while going 14 of 18 for 129 yards in the first half. Brian Lewerke is completing 53.2 percent of his passes for 281 yards, one touchdown and one interception. It was the second ejection of Bullough's career. Then the targeting call is unfortunate, but that's the rule nowadays. The balance allowed Maryland's athletic offensive line to create openings for its talented duo of runners in sophomore Ty Johnson (nine carries, 115 yards) and freshman Lorenzo Harrison (17 carries, 105 yards).

The Terrapins started Perry Hills at quarter back for the first time since their lost to Penn State, and he showed quickly that he could run this offense unlike Maryland fans had seen since he went out.

"I was on the field when that play happened", Thomas said after last week's 41-8 trouncing of IL.

MSU again pinned Maryland deep in its own territory, but it wouldn't last long. Hills responded on the ensuing drive with a 36-yard pass to D.J. Moore but Adam Greene missed the PAT. Maryland was gashed on the ground during the first half, giving up 163 rushing yards and 269 yards of total offense. Gerald Holmes scored from 1 yard with 38 seconds remaining to tie the score 14-14.

Michael Geiger's 34-yard field goal put Michigan State ahead for the first time at 17-14 with 1:35 left in the third quarter.

Michigan State has won four straight in the series four times, the last coming from 2008-11. ONeill bobbled a low snap and instead of falling on the ball as Harbaugh would say after the game he wished the punter had done — though ONeill was never coached to do that — he whirled and tried to get the kick off only to be swarmed by Spartans. Moore now leads all Maryland receivers with a reception in 15 consecutive games dating back to October 3, 2015.
