With the count 0-2 on Cespedes, Ramos threw a high fastball that glanced off the mitt of catcher J.T. Realmuto and went to the screen behind home.

In the opener of a four-game set, the Mets appeared overmatched on the mound.

Jose Reyes continued to rake and Seth Lugo pitched six strong innings in his third career start as the Mets topped the Marlins, 7-4.

Jose Reyes dashed home to score the tying run in the eighth on a unsafe collision at the plate, and the Mets pulled even with Miami for second place in the NL East. With its seventh victory in nine games, NY remained 2ᄑ games behind St. Louis for the league's second wild card. Now the Miami Marlins are hoping their fortunes can change in an instant. Seven of Familia's saves this year have come against Miami - most for any major league reliever versus one team.

It all started with New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes walking out to the plate with the Lion King classic, the 'Circle of Life, ' playing over the stadium speakers.

Miami is operating at the other end of the offensive spectrum and has totaled six runs during a four-game slide.

The first two reached in the third in front of the heart of Miami's order in a 3-2 game, but Lugo retired the next three batters in order.to keep the Mets ahead.

Alejandro De Aza added an RBI single later in the inning off Dustin McGowan, and Granderson launched a two-run shot in the seventh. It was the 17th home run this season and fourth in 11 at-bats for the reigning NL player of the week.

Cabrera's left knee - which has sidelined him twice since spring training - was sore Sunday, and he told the training staff Monday it wouldn't be wise to play. They need a healthy Neil Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera who came off the bench and struck out in the seventh.

Slumping deadline pickup Jay Bruce ripped a double into the right-field corner one out later and scored the go-ahead run on Wilmer Flores' two-out single to center. He fell to 2-7 with a 4.37 ERA against the Mets.

The American League-leading Rangers won the first of six straight games at home against the two teams chasing them in the AL West and dropped the Mariners into third place, a game behind Houston and 9ᄑ back of Texas. Lugo (2-2) has won two of his three starts since taking over for Matz. The score would remain that way until the sixth inning as Lugo (W, 2-2) danced in and out of trouble all night long. OF Giancarlo Stanton (strained left groin) and LHP Adam Conley (finger tendinitis) both went to a doctor in NY for another opinion, Mattingly said. "There wasn't a dragging of the heads or anything like that", manager Don Mattingly said.

"That, more than anything, adds pitches, it adds hitters", Mattingly said of Realmuto's mental miscue. Cashner was scratched from his turn Sunday. It is unclear when the starting middle infielders will be back in the field and because Walker and Cabrera are both dealing with injuries that have recently kept them out of action, Manager Terry Collins had additional concern about the potential severity of seemingly day-to-day ailments.
